The weather had improved slightly by Saturday morning. The sky was overcast, sometimes menacingly so, but there were also patches of blue. We rode in a procession of traffic around the west side of Lake Annecy, filtering through some long queues as we neared the town at the north end.
We stopped to discuss the route. I wanted to give Switzerland a miss in order to avoid paying the obligatory 40E road tax, so we headed north on the A41 then west on the A40 just before the Swiss border. The weather continued to improve with just the odd shower but the temperature stayed in the low teens. We joined the A6 (optimistically subtitled the autoroute du soleil) for a short time, then turned off towards Autun in the hope of riding some excellent Burgundy roads. We weren't disappointed - the D978 is a particularly good biking road.
We stopped at a supermarket in Autun and then rode across high, wooded countryside towards Vézeley on gravelly, winding roads. We dithered over where to pitch for the night, but eventually settled on a peaceful and almost deserted campsite by the Lac de Saint-Agnan. Richard was chef and cooked a very impressive (and apposite) Boeuf Bourgignon. Our neighbours seemed to be amused at the sight of two men cooking. (Yes, I did play my part by stirring the pot occasionally and adjusting the flame on the stove.)
It got very cold in the night but the view of the stars was the best I've had all holiday.
